Ray Dominguez

Metal Finishing Specialist · 28 Years

Dominguez Coachworks · East Los Angeles, CA

Specialty: Hammer-and-Dolly Metal Finishing

The hammer doesn't fix the panel. Your eye does. The hammer is just how you have the conversation.

Ray Dominguez learned metal finishing the way most things worth learning are taught — badly, then slowly, then all at once. He spent his first three years at his uncle's shop in Boyle Heights sweeping floors and watching a journeyman named Sal work a fender until the reflection ran clean. Nobody explained anything. You watched until you understood, or you didn't.

Twenty-eight years later, Dominguez runs a six-bay restoration shop that refuses CNC-cut patch panels on anything he considers a proper repair. Every dent, every crease, every rocker that's gone soft from decades of road salt gets worked from the inside out — hammer, dolly, slapper — until the metal remembers what it was supposed to be.

Insurance adjusters who've written his estimates call him difficult. His customers call him the last man who still does it right.

"I've sent three apprentices to work under Ray for six-month stretches. Two of them can now read a panel the way he does. The third one quit and went into HVAC. That's not a criticism of Ray."

Kenji Okafor

PDR Specialist · 14 Years

Okafor Paintless · Chicago, IL

Paintless Dent Repair

Filler hides the problem. Light finds it every time. I don't hide anything.

Kenji Okafor came to PDR from a background in fine watchmaking — a detail that explains everything about how he approaches a dent. Where most technicians see a damaged panel, Okafor sees a series of stress gradients radiating from an impact point, each one requiring its own sequence of correction before the next can be addressed.

He works with LED reflection boards he built himself, angled to catch the exact light conditions that expose the ghost of every previous repair attempt. He has turned down more work than he's accepted, returning cars to dealers and insurance companies with a written explanation of why a PDR repair would be dishonest on that particular damage.

"Kenji flagged a prior repair on a car we bought at auction that three other shops missed. That single call saved us from a six-figure mistake."

Brandt Collision Technologies · Fremont, CA

Tesla-Certified Aluminum Repair

Aluminum doesn't lie. It work-hardens. Push it wrong and you've already lost — you just don't know it yet.

Sonja Brandt opened Brandt Collision Technologies two years before Tesla's Fremont plant started producing at volume. That timing, which she describes as 'dumb luck and good positioning,' made her one of the first independent shops in Northern California to achieve Tesla's approved repairer status.

The certification process required rebuilding her entire shop around aluminum repair protocols — dedicated tools, dedicated storage, a separate aluminum welding bay to prevent contamination with steel. The investment was substantial. The waiting list to get into her shop is currently eleven weeks.

"She's the only person I'd trust with a Model S structural repair. Not the only Tesla shop — the only one I trust."
